Mothersbane wins Best Short Doc at SXSW!

March 18, 2011

I’m very excited to report that Mothersbane was awarded the Best Short Documentary award at the South by Southwest Film Festival on Tuesday. I had a chance to see both documentary short programs and was impressed with the quality of the films and proud to be screening alongside them. The award was a complete surprise – my cinematographer Sinisa had dragged me to the ceremony despite my assurances that we weren’t going to win anything. I wish I had dressed better and prepared a speech. The actual award is a hilariously large belt-buckle with a matching belt. I’ll post a picture later. The selection committee was juried by Jay Duplass, director of The Puffy Chair and Baghead. He was very kind and generous in his praise and I regret not being able to say anything to him other than “Thanks, I appreciate it” over and over until it just got too awkward to bear. I’m back from SXSW now, recooperating in Oakland (I’m way too delicate for that scene), and preparing to head up to Sebastopol for the town’s Doc Film Festival and a relaxing long weekend with my family. Your speech was perfect, thanking your parents made the place love you and your film more, as for the belt buckle, well it is Texas!

Well done, can’t wait to see the next film from you.
